RHT Endorses New Legislation to Expand Medicare Coverage of Telehealth

SAN ANTONIO, TX (July 22, 2015) – In a letter today to congressional backers of bipartisan legislation that will expand coverage of telehealth services under Medicare, Tim Koxlien, CEO of TeleQuality Communications and its division Rural Health Telecom℠ (RHT), urged for the passage of H.R. 2948, the Medicare Telehealth Parity Act of 2015, that places telehealth on a path toward parity with in-person health care visits.

“Telehealth provides innovative technology that delivers access to health care, particularly for 58 million Americans who reside in rural areas where health care providers are few and far between,” Koxlien said.

He commended U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA), Gregg Harper (R-MS), Diane Black (R-TN) and Peter Welch (D-VT) who introduced the landmark legislation July 7th.

“There is absolutely no doubt that telehealth and telemedicine save lives and save money,” Koxlien said. “Current laws and regulations are often obstacles that prevent patients in rural and urban areas from fully utilizing telemedicine.”

He urged health care leaders to email their congressional representatives in support of the legislation that will further technological advancements while improving patient care and outcomes, and lowering health care costs.

“It is generally recognized that Medicare and Medicaid unfortunately have been dragging their feet when it comes to providing support for trending 21st century telehealth that is expanding rapidly across the United States,” Koxlien said. “It is time the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) step up to the plate and make a full-fledged effort to provide rural families with these life-saving technical advancement, without delay. This legislative initiative will be the encouragement CMS needs!”
